Canadian citizenship grants you the rights and privileges of a Canadian citizen, including the right to vote, hold public office, live and work anywhere in Canada, and access Canadian government services.

How to Obtain Canadian Citizenship

There are two primary ways to obtain Canadian citizenship:

1) Citizenship by Birth: If you are born in Canada or to a Canadian citizen parent, you automatically acquire Canadian citizenship.
2) Citizenship by Naturalization: If you are a permanent resident of Canada, you may apply for citizenship after meeting certain residency requirements.

Who can apply

To become a Canadian citizen, most applicants must

* Be a permanent resident
* Have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days)
* Have filed their taxes, if they need to
* Pass a citizenship test
* Prove their language skills in English or French
* Take the oath of citizenship

Who has to take the oath:

* Adults and children aged 14 or over must go to the citizenship ceremony and take the oath.
* Parents will get certificates of citizenship for their children under age 14. Children under age 14 don’t have to go but are welcome to.
